Detailed Solution

The Nayanars were devotees of Shiva, while the Alvars were devotees of Vishnu.
The Nayanas and the Alvars led religious movements in southern India from the 7th to the 9th centuries. The Nayanas were followers of Shiva, while the Alvars were followers of Vishnu. They belong to all castles, including those considered "untouchable," like  Pulaiyar and  Panars. They preach the love of Lord Shiva or Vishnu as the path to salvation. They travelled from place to place, composing beautiful poems praising the gods worshipped in the villages they visited and playing music to them. There are 63 Nayanars of different compositions. There are 12 Avvars from equally different backgrounds. Nayanars and Alvars are divine Tamil poets. They played an important role between the 5th and 10th centuries in the spread of the Bhakti movement in southern India.
