Swaraj for plantation workers in Assam means freedom to roam freely inside or outside confined spaces and to live without restrictions. The British authorities restricted them from leaving the workplace without permission which was rarely granted. By the Inland Emigration Act of 1859, Britishers exploited plantation workers. But when they heard about Gandhi and his notion of Swaraj, the workers thought the time was coming when all difficulties and suffering would end. So they defied the rules and left the plantations, believing that Gandhi Raj would provide land in their villages. However, they could not reach their destination due to a railway strike. Thus they were caught by the police and severely punished.
