After European sailors discovered a sea route to Asia and successfully sailed across the western ocean to America in the sixteenth century, the pre-modern world significantly shrank. The Indian Ocean had previously seen a thriving trade with commodities, people, knowledge, customs, etc., circling its seas for ages. These flows were concentrated on the Indian subcontinent, a key node in their networks. The arrival of the Europeans aided in the expansion or diversion of some of these flows in Europe. America had been isolated for millions of years before its "discovery". Thus, in the fifteenth century, its enormous territories with an abundance of minerals and foodstuffs started to change trade and lives all over the world.
