The convention abolished the monarchy and declared France a republic. The Convention came into existence in 1972 when Parisians invaded the Palace of Tuileries and held the monarch hostage. The National Legislative Assembly legislature was forced to hand over the power to a newly elected assembly called Convention. So elections were held, and all men above 21 got voting rights. The freshly elected Convention overturned the form of government established by 1791.Constitution; they did away with constitutional monarchy. Hence the convention abolished the monarchy and declared France a republic.
