Detailed Solution

The Vernacular press act was passed in British India in order to restrict the liberty of the Indian press.
The Vernacular Press Act (1878) was enacted in British India to curtail press freedom and forbid criticism of British policy. On March 14, 1878, the Viceroy's Council unanimously adopted the Act after it was proposed by Lytton, the viceroy of India. The Vernacular Press Act (VPA) was enacted to "completely regulate" the vernacular media and to punish and restrict "publications in eastern languages".
