The Partition of Bengal came into effect on Oct 16, 1905. Partition of Bengal was strongly opposed. The British explained that it was done for easy administration purposes. But the actual objective was to divide and rule. It was intended to set up a communal gulf between Hindus and Muslims. The INC condemned the partition of Bengal. The Boycott and Swadeshi movement was the anti-partition movement. It started to oppose the decision to divide Bengal.
