The Constituent Assembly drafted a constitution for an independent India.
Indians were persuaded by their extensive experience with authoritarianism under the colonial administration that their country should be free and run as a democracy with equal rights for all citizens. The task was to identify how a democratic government would be established in India and the guidelines by which it would operate. It was accomplished not by a single individual but by a group of about 300 individuals who formed the Constituent Assembly in 1946 and met regularly for the following three years to draft India's Constitution. The Constituent Assembly created a constitution for independent India between December 1946 and November 1949.
