Detailed Solution

The scattering effect of light causes the sun's reddish appearance at sunrise and sunset.
The light travels a greater distance through the atmosphere during sunrise and sunset as the sun is at the horizon during sunrise and sunset. So all the colours of the white lights get scattered away, and only the red colour can pass through the thicker layer of the atmosphere due to its largest wavelength. Thus the red light is less scattered and thus reaches the observer. As a result, the sun appears reddish during sunrise and sunset.
