Detailed Solution

The Election Commission is an independent body which has a wide range of powers to conduct elections in India. The Election Commission(EC) is autonomous and has a variety of functions, which includes the following :
1) From the announcement of elections through the release of results, the EC makes all decisions on the conduct and management of elections.
2) It enforces the Model Code of Conduct and penalises candidates and parties that violate it.
3) During election time, the EC has the authority to require the government to adhere to specific rules, prohibit the use and abuse of government power to increase its prospects of winning elections or remove certain government officials.
4) When on election duty, government officials report to the EC rather than the government.
