It also provides trends in population characteristics. The Census is widely recognised as one of the most trustworthy sources of statistics on demography, economic activity, literacy and education, housing and household amenities, urbanisation, fertility and mortality, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, and language. The decennial Census in India had been held 15 times as of 2011. The Census was initiated by British Viceroy Lord Mayo in 1872. It aided in the establishment of new policies and government programmes to meet the demands of the community.
