Detailed Solution

The Institutional Revolutionary Party consistently won elections in Mexico until 2000. Since its independence in 1930, Mexico has held elections every six years to elect its President. The country has never been under the rule of the military or a dictator. But until 2000, every election was won by a party called the PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party). Opposition parties participated in the election but never won. This was possible because the PRI used many dirty tricks to win elections. Everyone working in government offices had to attend the meetings of the party. Public school teachers used to force parents to vote for PRI. Moreover, the media largely ignored the activities of the opposition political parties except to criticise them. Sometimes polling places were moved from one place to another at the last minute, making it difficult for people to vote.
