The secretary reviews the performance of the gram panchayat. Gram panchayat is the governing body of the villages. Members of Gram Panchayat who are under gram sabha elect the members of the gram panchayat. The assigned head of the gram panchayat is known as the sarpanch (or Pradhan). The representatives (villagers) are elected to hold an official tenure of 5 years. A secretary in the village (a non-elected member) administers the proceedings of the gram panchayat.
