Detailed Solution

The Overlapping social differences in Northern Ireland led to violent political conflict.
Social differences are generally of two types, depending on the nature and impact of such differences. Cross-cutting social differences cut across social divisions. Cross-cutting social differences are easier to accommodate because they don’t lead to substantial social divisions. Alternatively, overlapping social divisions lead to bigger social disparities in society. In Northern Ireland, religious and class differences overlap with each other. Therefore, the religious difference in the country is deepened by class differences. Catholics are more troubled with poverty than Protestants. This has led to political conflict between the social groups. Catholics demanded that Ireland be reunited with the Republic of Ireland. Protestants wanted to remain in the UK. In the violence that followed, several people lost their lives.
