Detailed Solution

The Constitution of India was amended to introduce an anti-defection law. India has a multi-party system, meaning numerous political parties exist in the country. Earlier, the elected members used to switch parties to get a position in the government or to get personal favours. This used to undermine the ideals of the Indian democratic system. To counter this issue, the Indian Constitution was amended to introduce anti-defection provisions to establish a stable political order. The anti-defection law specified that the elected members could not leave the political party from which it was elected, or they would lose their seats in the legislature. This law controlled the problem of defection to a certain extent.
