The 1857 revolt started from Meerut.
The actual mutiny started at Meerut in 1857. The British had imprisoned eighty-five troops belonging to the 3rd Bengal Light Cavalry for refusing to use the fat-laden cartridges. They felt that these were against their religious beliefs. Later on, other fellow soldiers freed them. Indian sepoys, who made up more than 87% of the British forces in India, were seen as less capable than British soldiers. The sepoys started the Revolt of 1857 as a sepoy mutiny. A European soldier of equal rank earned more money than an Indian sepoy. The Indian soldiers stationed at the Meerut cantonment in present-day UP rebelled against the British on May 10, 1857.
