The 1940 German assault on Northwest Europe is also called the Battle of France.
Not only was France captured and subjected during the German invasion of north-west Europe known as the Battle of France, but also Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Belgium. Hitler invaded France in 1940, following his invasions of Denmark and Norway. The Allies (Britain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands) had anticipated and planned for the Nazis to follow the same line of assault as in the First World War, through Belgium, as a German attack on the French-German border was doubtful due to the Maginot Line of defences. As a result, the Allies gathered their soldiers close to the France-Belgium border. British, French, and Belgian troops defended Dunkirk from a fierce German attack. Luxembourg, however, had already fallen.
