Detailed Solution

The abolition of corn laws laid the foundation of free trade, which allowed the import and export of food into Britain freely. An increase in the population and restrictions on the importance of food grains were responsible for the price rise of food grains in Britain in the late 18th century. With the expansion of urban centres and the growth of industries, the demand for agricultural products went up, resulting in increased food grain prices. The government restricted the import of corn due to pressure from land groups. The laws which allowed the government to do this were known as the Corn-laws. Industrialists and urban dwellers were not satisfied with high food prices, so they forced the abolition of the corn laws.
