The acrosome is a structure that forms the tip of the head of a spermatozoon. It contains hydrolytic enzymes that help in fertilisation. During fertilisation, the acrosome releases enzymes such as hyaluronidase and acrosin which digest the outer layers of the egg, allowing the sperm to penetrate the egg. The acrosome does not produce any hormones. Mitochondria are found in the middle piece of the sperm. Centrioles are present in the neck of the spermatozoon.
