The Act of 1956 recognised Sinhala as the only official language. Sinhala or Sinhalese is the majority community of Sri Lanka and comprises about 75 per cent of its population. The Sri Lankan government favours the majority community because minorities, especially Tamilians, feel alienated. The passing of this act made the language of the Tamilian minority suffer. Protests were led to include Tamil as an official language of the country, along with Sinhalese. It was later done with the passing of an act.
