The Act of Union (1707) between England and Scotland led to the formation of the "United Kingdom of Great Britain". England was able to assert its influence in Scotland. The British Parliament has since been ruled by its English members. The rise of British ownership meant that a separate Scottish culture and political institutions were systematically suppressed. The Catholic nations living in the Scottish Highlands were severely oppressed whenever they sought independence.
