The "United Kingdom of Great Britain" came into being as a result of the Act of Union in 1707. By this, England was able to impose its influence on Scotland. Scotland's culture, ethnicity, religion and political institutions were downgraded. They were forbidden to speak their Gaelic language or wear their traditional dresses. The English helped the Protestants of Ireland to dominate a predominantly Catholic country. Catholics revolted against this dominance, but their angst was suppressed. By doing this, the English incorporated Ireland into the United Kingdom in 1801. The new symbols of Britain, which are the British flag, national anthem, language, and political institutions, were given preference.
Prussia led the unification of Germany under the Prime Ministership of Otto Von Bismarck. In a ceremony held at Versailles in January 1871, Kaiser William I was installed as the new German Emperor. He served as the nation's first head of state. The unification of Italy led by King Victor Emmanuel II was proclaimed the king of United Italy in 1861. He was the first king of unified Italy and held this position till his death in 1878. Piedmont Cavour was the Chief Minister of Sardinia, who led the movement to unify the regions of Italy.
