The addition of a substance to speed up sedimentation is known as loading.
Loading is the method to expedite the sedimentation of finer particles of impurities. At times, we get muddy water in our taps. Mud particles are fine particles of impurities like clay, and they remain suspended in water for a long. A crystalline piece of alum is moved along the surface of muddy water to obtain clear water. Some alum gets dissolved in water. Its particles or molecules get attached to the dust particles, making them heavy. Heavy particles settle down fast. This results in early sedimentation of fine dust particles, leaving behind clear water above.
