The administration was obliged to accede to the demand for the Andhra language state after the death of Potti Sriramulu. In October 1952, Potti Sriramulu went on a hunger strike to press for the establishment of the Andhra state. Congress opposed the establishment of linguistic states after independence. Protests calling for a separate Andhra state met Nehru's election campaigns in 1952.
On December 15, 1952, Potti Sriramulu passed away. He had been fasting for 58 days. So, on October 1, 1953, the Central Government was compelled to establish Andhra Pradesh.
