Adult male literacy rose from 61.9 per cent in 1990 to 68.4 per cent in 2000, accounting for most of the increase. Women's literacy rates were only 37.9 per cent in 1990; they rose to 45.5 per cent in 2000, which is still significantly below what is considered "good" levels.
