The affairs of the Jatis were regulated by the Jati panchayat. The Jatis were the sub-castes divided based on their social and economic standing. According to their occupations and backgrounds, they were ranked. Ranks were not set in stone. They varied according to the level of authority, clout, and resources that Jati members controlled. Therefore, the status of the same jail may differ from region to region. The Jatis had their form of government. They created guidelines for controlling the behaviour of their members. Enforcing these rules was the responsibility of a council of elders. The name of this group of senior citizens was Jati Panchayat. However, jatis had to follow the laws of their villages as well.
