The African National Congress under their well-known leader Nelson Mandela led the struggle against apartheid for several years.
Apartheid was a race-based separation system that was used in South Africa. Under this system, white people were given preferential treatment. Non-white people, such as blacks, Indians, and people of coloured races, were considered inferior to white people. Non-white people used to get the best services, whereas non-white people were not even allowed to vote. Members of one race could not mingle with members of another race, live next to each other, or use shared facilities. When non-white people protested against such an unjust system, they were beaten up by the police. Finally, after years of struggle, the African National Congress led by Nelson Mandela succeeded in abolishing apartheid and forming a democratic government under which all races were considered equal.
