The agitated crowd in France stormed and destroyed the Bastille in the year 1789.
The French Revolution can be traced to the change of the Estates General into a real National Assembly in 1789. The dismissal of the popular minister Necker by Louis XVI aroused revolutionary elements in the people and resulted in the storming of the Bastille, the symbol of royal tyranny. The fortress of feudalism also collapsed with the fall of the Bastille when the nobles and clergymen voluntarily gave up their special privileges. The Declaration of the Rights of Man in 1789 granted them various social and political rights. The nationalisation of church property met the growing need for money. Finally, the adoption of the Constitution in 1791 stripped the king of most of his powers.
