In the thirteenth century, the Ahom people moved from what is now Myanmar to the Brahmaputra valley. They ruled over numerous other tribes and annexed the kingdoms of the Chutiyas (1523) and Koch-Hajo (1581) during the sixteenth century. Starting in the 1530s, the Ahoms employed weapons to create a sizable state. They were even able to produce cannons and high-quality gunpowder by the 1660s. The Ahoms, however, experienced many incursions from the southwest. The Mughals led by Mir Jumla attacked the Ahom kingdom in 1662.
