When an amoeba engulfs its food, the food is trapped inside a small pocket of the cell membrane, forming a structure called a food vacuole. The food vacuole then pinches off from the cell membrane and moves into the interior of the cell. Inside the cell, the food vacuole fuses with lysosomes, which are organelles containing digestive enzymes.
