Antigen binding occurs at the variable region of the N-terminal of both light and heavy chains (Fab fragment). The Fc fragment contains only the constant region of the heavy chains and it does not take part in the antigen binding. 

Variable regions of either of the heavy or light chains alone cannot take part in the antigen binding.
