The area of the following figure by counting squares will be 18 sq.units when area of 1 square= 1 sq. units.

Area of one full square in the grid = 1 sq. unit.
Area of one half square = 0.5 sq. units
Required area = Number of filled square × Area of one square
Counting the number of squares,
Number of full filled squares = 10
Number of half-filled squares = 16
So the area of the given shape,
∴ Area covered by full filled squares = 10

= 10 sq. units
And area covered by half-filled squares = 0.5

\times

16
= 8 sq. units
∴ Total area =( 10 + 8) sq. units
= 18 sq. units
