Detailed Solution

The Arms Act was passed in 1878. Following the 1857 revolt, the British Crown immediately assumed direct control over India. Lord Lytton was chosen to serve as Viceroy of India in 1858. The Indian Arms Act of 1878 was a product of legislation that was passed under the tenure of Lord Lytton. This law prohibited all Indians from producing, trading, owning, or carrying firearms. But the English were able to. Although it appeared to be appropriate, getting an arms licence required a lot of time for an Indian. According to this law, any Indian who wished to own a gun had to obtain a licence. Possession of an unauthorised firearm carried a fine and a maximum sentence of three years in jail.
