Detailed Solution

The athletes who tried to draw international attention to racial discrimination in the US were John Carlos and Tommie Smith. To draw international attention to the racial discrimination that existed in the United States of America, two of the African-American athletes in the Mexico Olympics, John Carlos and Tommie Smith, made gestures to signify black power. When the national anthem of the USA started to play, they stood with their hands raised, fists clenched, and their heads bowed. Through this, they symbolised black power. They also wore black socks without shoes to send a message to the international community about the black poverty that existed in America at that time. They did this to protest against the racial discrimination prevalent in America on the basis of the colour of their skin.
