The Awadh Kisan Sabha was headed by Baba Ramchandra.
Baba Ramchandra was a sanyasi and had previously worked as an indentured servant in Fiji. The movement in this area was against landowners and talukdars who imposed exorbitantly high rents and various additional cesses from peasants. By October, Baba Ramchandra and a few others had organised the Awadh Kisan Sabha. Over 300 branches had been established in the nearby villages in less than a month.
