The Balkan region includes Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Serbia.
It is a peninsula in southeast Europe. It takes its name from the Bulgarian portion of the Balkan Mountains. The Balkan area included contemporary Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Romania, Albania, Greece, Croatia, and Bulgaria. The ethnic diversity here is enormous and thus was the source of severe nationalist tension in Europe after 1871. The Ottoman Empire governed it, and the inhabitants were generally referred to as Slavs. However, significant disparities between the habitants of various sects resulted in several wars.
