Detailed Solution

The Balkans was a region of geographical and ethnic variations comprising modern-day Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Greece, Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Serbia, and Montenegro, whose inhabitants were broadly known as Slavs.
After 1871, the Balkans emerged as Europe's primary source of nationalist turmoil. The Balkans became extremely volatile due to the rise of romantic nationalism ideologies and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. The Balkans' rebellious ethnic groups perceived their conflicts as efforts to regain their long-lost freedom. The Balkan region developed into a hotbed of strife as the many Slavic nationalities fought to establish their independence and sense of self. The Balkan states harboured intense rivalry and a desire to expand their territories at the expense of the others.
