The beginning of the Second World War started when Germany attacked Poland.
The UK and France declared a second war against Germany when Germany attacked Poland. The USSR was a friend of Germany when the Second World War started, but the situation changed on June 22nd, 1941, when Germany attacked Russia. Consequently, Russia joined the Allies. The US was neutral during the Second World War, but the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour. This attack united the US with the Allies, and Japan was in the Axis group. Thus the Second World War occurred between 1939 and 1945. The two major powers in this war were the Allies comprising the UK, US and USSR and the Axis Powers with Germany, Italy and Japan.
