The best forests were called Reserved Forests. The Forest Act of 1878 created a division of forests into three categories: reserved, protected, and village forests. The reserved forests were the most valuable forests for the colonial government. They were called the best forests due to their production of the best quality of timber. These forests were completely under the control of the government. The villagers were not allowed to enter such forests and collect produce for their use. These forests consisted of sal and deodar trees that were utilized for shipbuilding, railways, fuelwood, etc. The reserved forests were of commercial use to the government and so they were provided with legal sanctions.
