Detailed Solution

The Bhopal gas tragedy took place in 1984. At midnight on 2 December 1984, a highly poisonous gas, methyl isocyanate (MIC), was leaked from the plant set up by a US-based company Union Carbide (UC), in Bhopal. This poisonous gas caused disaster in the town by killing almost 8000 people and affecting lakhs of people severely. It made the people breathless, and they died helplessly. Most of the people who suffered in this tragedy included middle-class workers and the poor living near the plant and the adjoining areas. This tragedy brought the issue of environmental degradation by factories and industries to the forefront. This tragedy forced the Indian government to make many environmental laws to save the localities and the general public from the harmful emissions of industries.
