The big temples of Gangaikondacholapuram and Thanjavur were built by Rajendra and Rajaraja Chola. Both these temples are sculptural and architectural marvels. Settlements came to be centred around the Chola temples. Chola temples became centres of craft production. Rulers and others both endowed lands to the temples. The products generated from this land maintained the livelihood of all the specialists who worked at the temple and often lived near it. They included priests, cooks, garland makers, sweepers, musicians, dancers, etc. Apart from temples being a place of worship, they were also a place of economic, social, and cultural life.
