The boat race is an important part of Onam festival.
This is a form of canoe racing using a combat canoe with paddles. It is mainly held during the spring Onam harvest festival season. Vallam Kali includes different types of paddle boats and "snake boat" races. Each team spends about 6 lakh rupees on the Nehru Trophy. The main event is the Chundan Vallam race ("Snake Boat," about 30-35 metres (100-120 feet) long with 64 or 128 paddlers on board). Therefore, Valamkari, also known as the Snake Boat Race, is a significant tourist attraction. Other types of boats participating in various race events are churulan vallam, iruttukuthy vallam, Modi vallam, Beppu vallam, vadakkanody vallam, and Koch vallam.
