Detailed Solution

The book The Social Contract mentioned the idea of one person, one vote. Jean Jacques Rousseau was a French philosopher whose ideas and thoughts helped shape the French Revolution. His famous work The Social Contract proposed the idea of one person, one vote. Influenced by this idea, members of the Third Estate who gathered in the Estates General on May 5 1789, to pass the proposal for new taxes demanded that each member should have one vote instead of each estate one vote. The rationale behind this demand was although the size of the representatives of the Third Estate was huge, their vote was pointless; even if the Third Estate voted no, the other two estates would definitely say yes to more taxes to be imposed on the Third Estate and by the rule of majority Third Estate would lose. But the king rejected such a proposal.
