The British conducted the first census in 1871 under British Viceroy Lord Mayo. The census took place in ancient India. It has been mentioned in the Rig Veda and also in Arthashastra. Following that, the government has undertaken a frequent census every ten years. The final census before independence was conducted in 1941. After India's independence, the Bhore Committee urged the government to appoint a Registrar General of Vital and Population Statistics at the national and provincial levels. The Census Act went into effect in 1948, as recommended by the Committee.
