Detailed Solution

The British described the tribal people as wild and savage. The tribal people practised shifting cultivation and depended on the forests for their livelihoods. At the same time, some tribal groups were pastoral nomads who moved from place to place in search of pastures for their animals to graze. Moreover, the tribals worshipped nature and performed various rituals. The British did not like this lifestyle of the tribals. They viewed the tribals as animalistic pagans who needed to be civilised and settled by the "white" coloniser. Moreover, the British wanted to keep track of all the lands and survey them so that they could create a systematic taxation system and clear forests for plantations, and this could be possible only if the tribals were settled in one place.
