The British divided East Bengal in 1905.
The Indian National Congress saw the division of the party into extremists and moderates. The Congress split in 1907 in the Surat session. After the break, the Moderates took control of the Congress, with Tilak's supporters remaining on the periphery. Although they shared the same goal—an independent India—the methods they used to achieve it were very different. Liberal politics and moderate ideals were shared by moderates. Extremists were aggressive, they believed in passive resistance and non-cooperating with the British. They follow an aggressive method.
