The British East India Company appointed a paid servant called Gomasthas to supervise weavers and collect supplies.
The British East India Company initiated direct contact with the weavers through a government-paid servant known as the gomastha. The company officials eliminated the local traders and brokers associated with the trade to ensure their monopoly. The gomastha advanced loans to the weavers for procuring the necessary raw materials supervised them, scrutinized the cloth quality, and collected the final product. But soon, clashes arose between them as the gomasthas were government servants, outsiders with no social link with the weaving villages.
