Detailed Solution

The British East India Company emerged as a political power in India by the second half of the 18th century. The Mughals, the then-ruling power, and the local rulers gave the British East India Company permission to gently and steadily expand its trading activities in India. By the middle of the 18th century, the British East India Company had established plans to become a political force as the Mughal Empire began to disintegrate and split into successor states. After making careful preparations, the British East India Company gained a firm presence in Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa. This was accomplished with its wins in the battles of Buxar (1765) and Plassey (1757). Since then, the British employed a three-pronged strategy to build up and expand the British Indian Empire: an ideological, military, and colonial administrative infrastructure.
