Detailed Solution

The British government acquired monopoly rights over salt production and imposed the salt tax.
One of the essential ingredients in food, salt, was consumed by the wealthy and the poor. According to Mahatma Gandhi, the tariff on salt and the government's monopoly over its manufacture exposed the most repressive aspect of British rule. As a result, 78 of Mahatma Gandhi's dependable volunteers were with him when he began his well-known salt march. From Gandhiji's ashram at Sabarmati to the Gujarati coastal town of Dandi, the train covered a distance of more than 240 kilometres. For 24 days, the volunteers averaged 10 miles per day of walking. Wherever Mahatma Gandhi went, crowds of people flocked to hear him speak. He explained what swaraj meant and encouraged them to resist the British nonviolently. Finally, he arrived in Dandi on April 6 and broke the law to make salt by boiling seawater.
