Detailed Solution

The Vernacular Press Act was passed in 1878 to curtail rising discontentment among Indians. It was based on the Irish Press Laws. According to the act, the government got the tyrannical right to censor reports and editorials published in the vernacular press. Any report against the government was published. Even after the warning, if the newspaper company did not bring down the news, the press was seized, and printing machinery was confiscated. This was a violation of the right to expression. Furthermore, the government kept track of various vernacular newspapers published in different provinces. The vernacular newspaper became a tool for spreading nationalism, and the British government imposed stringent control over it.
