Detailed Solution

The British regained control of the country in 1859. It was nicknamed the Sepoy Mutiny by the British (the revolt of 1857). Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first head administrator, suggested using the term "First War of Independence" to refer to the 1857 insurrection, and the Indian government agreed. The resistance began in 1857 as a sepoy insurrection inside the company's soldiers in the post town of Meerut, 64 kilometres east of Delhi, today known as Old Delhi. It spread into other upheavals and unorganised citizen uprisings at the time, particularly in central India and the upper Gangetic plain, though incidences of insurgency happened further north and east as well.
